THE CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD FURNHAM CHARD
A Short History Of The Organ
The Pipe Organ in church was built locally in the Southwest by HELE Organ Builders of Plymouth and its original cost was £500. The Hele Organ Company was founded in the mid 19th century and built and installed a number of instruments throughout the Southwest and the rest of the United Kingdom.
To enable the church to obtain the organ, a generous donation of £250 was given by U.S.A. Steel Magnate Andrew Carnegie and £100 by local man Mr. Conway Lucas ROSE of Furnham House, Fore Street, CHARD.
The organ was installed during the autumn of 1910 and the spring of 1911, with the Service of Dedication being held on Friday the 24th March 1911. This prestigious occasion was marked by a recital given by John Calvert Hele FRCO, voicer, tuner and family member of the organ builders HELE.
